The purpose of this text is to illustrate the use of dense apatite implants in restorative dentistry. It contains information pertaining to the preparation of dense apatite ceramics, their mechanical and physical properties, and the tissue response to their implantation. Clinical and histologic material derived from both animal and human studies is presented. The clinical portion of this book deals primarily with root-form implants. This includes the use of hydroxylapatite cones for ridge maintenance under full and partial dentures and dense apatite ceramic/titanium implants for tooth replacement. The book, which is well illustrated, contains excellent photographs of gross and histologic tissue specimens that were obtained to evaluate the response to ceramic implants. Clinical photographs demonstrate the surgical procedures and clinical results in detail. This book is a good source of introductory information regarding the use of a limited variety of dense apatite ceramic implants in dentistry. Both the basic and clinical science information it provides should be useful to practitioners.
