WHAT IS DIABETES?

“The adult who senses the child's need (to understand the nature of reality) and responds with integrity to the child's inquiries will find the child's heart and mind linked with his own”, Edith Cobb. In the Spring of 1982, the children of the third grade were a tightly knit group of friends who had been with the same teacher since the first grade. When their classmate Stefano became ill with diabetes, trying to understand the strange and frightening reality that had shaken their secure world, the children sought an explanation from their teacher “Mira” and, at her suggestion, wrote me a letter: “Since you know so many things, could you tell us: Where does diabetes come from? How can one cure it? What is diabetes?” Thus began “The Book”.
